Still Slammed

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 24, 2008, 11:10 AM

Haven't had a chance to catch up here and my inbox currently stands at 4,267 deviations, 1,114 messages. Fun! I'm hoping to be able to catch up on at least some of it this week.

Nothing new to report. The usual. Kids are on summer vacation so I'm done with homeschooling till Fall, but I've been catching up on housework and the family has been adjusting to the new schedule that comes with The Husband's new job. It's more time-consuming than one would think!

I hope all is well with everyone, and as always, thank you to everyone who recently commented and faved, I will thank you personally soon, but I don't want it to appear to go unnoticed in the meantime. I am always appreciative of the support.

SO busy last week! The Husband had a job interview (he got the job, he starts in two weeks), he also had to meet with The Georgia Review, University of Georgia's literary magazine, because they asked him to write some reviews for them, and then it was The Daughter's eleventh birthday on Friday, so we had a weekend of fun and running around.

A friend of ours threw her a party at her house and there was dancing and karaoke and everyone was dressed up "dramatically" as The Daughter requested.

And the next day we went to The Husband's parents' house for a pool party for her.

I'm only just now recovering!

Consequently I'm behind here, again, of course, when am I not?? Hopefully I can catch up in the next couple of days and get back on the features.

Feature: Tangled Up In Blue

Journal Entry: Tue May 20, 2008, 12:18 AM

:iconglitterdarkstar:

I saw the lovely Absinthe do this on her journal with the lyrics to The Cure's Boys Don't Cry and thought it was a great idea and then tonight when I was listening to Tangled Up in Blue by Bob Dylan, which is a visually evocative song to me, I thought I would hit the halls of deviantART and see what I could come up with.

Tangled Up in Blue
Bob Dylan, c. 1974

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin',
I was layin' in bed

Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red.

Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough

They never did like Mama's homemade dress

Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough.

And I was standin' on the side of the road
Rain fallin' on my shoes

Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through,

Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced

I helped her out of a jam, I guess,
But I used a little too much force.

We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West

Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best.

She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin' away
I heard her say over my shoulder,
"We'll meet again someday on the avenue,"

Tangled up in blue.

I had a job in the great north woods

Working as a cook for a spell

But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell.

So I drifted down to New Orleans

Where I happened to be employed
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat
Right outside of Delacroix.

But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind,
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew

Tangled up in blue.

She was workin' in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,

I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear.

And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "Don't I know your name?"

I muttered somethin' underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.

I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,

Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said
"You look like the silent type."

Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century.

And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,

Tangled up in blue.

I lived with them on Montague Street

In a basement down the stairs,

There was music in the cafes at night

And revolution in the air.

Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died.

She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside.

And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn,

The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew,

Tangled up in blue.

So now I'm goin' back again,
I got to get to her somehow.

All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now.

Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives.

Don't know how it all got started,
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives.

But me, I'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint

We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,

Tangled up in blue.

Late Sunday's Random Words

Journal Entry: Sun May 18, 2008, 11:45 PM

Had a very busy weekend, three different parties (housewarming, afternoon birthday to watch baseball at the bar, and late night surprise birthday karaoke at a sushi place), and apparently am so exhausted I can't sleep. Shocking, right? Because I always regale you with tales of how easily and often I sleep...

As you all (I think) know by now, my thirteen-year-old son was diagnosed with Type I diabetes in October of last year after being hospitalised for several days.

We've decided that this October, for the one year anniversary, the entire family will walk in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes. We have a team page and I am going to link to it at the bottom of this journal and leave it up on subsequent journals in case any of you would like to donate to this very worthy cause. Even $5.00 makes a big difference. Many thanks in advance.

And because I'm bored and can't sleep and on a completely different note, a survey I stole from
:icondjberry::

Who was your first childhood friend? The first close one I remember was called Patty and we both loved horses.

Are you still friends? No.

How many times have you moved in your life? Too many to count, seriously, it would take me all night to try to figure out the number.

Have you ever been in love? Many times over.

At what age would you say you stopped being a kid? Haven't quite stopped that yet and I'm forty next year.

Enjoy gloomy/rainy days? Love them.

Have any good-luck charms? Yes, many, I'm a firm believer in talismans and tokens.

Have any snow dances/superstitions for getting a day off of school? Nope.

When you were five years old, what did you want to be when you grew up? Can't remember five, but I wanted to have a horse farm, that's the earliest aspiration I can remember.

And now? A professional photographer.

Can you read music? No. I wish I had kept up with piana lessons.

Speak another language? Very, very little of French, Spanish, and Latin.

What's your favorite cereal? Don't like milk, so not fond of cereal. Love yogurt and granola, though.

You opinion of the 80s? Hee hee. Can't think of anything but the fashion (terrible) and the music (some redeemable things) when I think of the 80's. I was in high school then.

Believe in magic? Absolutely.

If you could go anywhere, where would you go? So many places. Ireland is at the top of my list, but I really want to travel the world and see everything I can. I want to ride the train from Russia to China, I was to see Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, explore Europe, safari in Africa, start in Patagonia and work my way up South America, I want to see the Northern Lights...I could go on and on.

Who would you want to be stranded on an island with? I don't think there's anyone I could be stranded on an island with indefinitely.

Did you read a lot when you were a kid? All the time.

And now? I find it difficult to concentrate these days. I don't know why. It's very upsetting.

Have you ever watched cheesy sci-fi shows? Some, not many.

Do you like Broadway musicals? Some, not many.

Like instrumental movie soundtracks? Hee hee. Some, not many.

What superhero did you always pretend to be as a kid? Wonder Woman.

Favorite Disney movie? Fantasia.

Don't you miss the Angry Beavers and old All That? Hee hee. Yes! Loved the Angry Beavers.

Did you have any mortal enemies in elementary school? I think everyone does, yes.

When, would you say, was the best time of your life? I don't think I've had it yet.

What are you looking forward to most at the moment? Sleeping!

How do you express yourself? Bluntly. It gets me in trouble.

Do you watch anime? Not by choice, but The Husband and The Daughter love it, so I've seen a lot.

If you could have one superpower: I'm afraid of heights or I'd say flying...hmm, don't know, maybe be able to read minds?

If you could be any animal? Wolf. I mean, I'd say horse, but my husband would tell you I'm already a wolf.

What movie made you want your 7 bucks and 2 hours back? SO many things! But I have to say top of my list would be Superman 4 which I stupidly went to with two friends because they wanted to see it. I walked out.

What movie scared the crap out of you? When I was a kid, The Shining.

Made you cry (even if you won't admit it)? Braveheart. I'm a sucker.

What movie do you love even though you know it's stupid? Anything with Shelley Long in it. Don't ask me why, I have no idea, but I love her.

Favorite toy when you were a kid? My Breyer horses.

Still have it? I have two of them left.

Do you like cows? I love to eat them, I've never known any personally.

Hate public speaking? Despise it. My husband and I organised local poetry readings here in town just to try to help me get over it in a small, literate group. It didn't work. Still terrified.

Hate numbers? Yes.

Do you think you were brainwashed as a little kid? All kids are brainwashed to some degree about or by something, unfortunately, but we fight back as we get older and learn to think for ourselves and be skeptical.

Do you agree with the religion you were brought up with? Went away from it, wandered a great deal, returned to it, and am looking out the window again for other paths.

If not, do you plan on giving your children a choice in the matter? My children have always had a choice in that matter.

Consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist? A pragmatist with occasional forays into pollyanna optimism and suicidal pessimism.

Do you frequently experience deja vu? No. Every once in a while.

Because you've dreamed the future, or is it a glitch in the Matrix? There's always a glitch.

Do you frequently experience deja vu? Hee hee. Very cute.

What single event/person/thing has most changed your life? Meeting my Husband again after high school and falling hard for him or the births of my children. Both are significant and life-changing in different ways and hard to say which is more significant.

What's your favorite Shakespeare play? The Tempest.

How It All Began

Journal Entry: Thu May 8, 2008, 1:32 AM

Was digging through some old photographs tonight and found this one of me when I was about fifteen or sixteen.

I took a black and white film photography class in high school where we learned to roll film, load a camera, shoot pictures, take the film out, and develop and print it. The camera in my hands was the class's camera. You could sign it out and borrow it for a weekend and I did to go shoot at the Chattahoochee River. Of course, when I got back from that trip, I jokingly said to someone in my class that I was in love with the camera and was going to steal it. Two days later it was stolen and I got blamed for it, despite swearing on my father's grave that I had not. Ah, high school...

But that's how it all began. I loved everything about it. The weight of the camera in my hands. Learning about it all. The click of the shutter. The smell of chemicals. Every single aspect of it fascinated me.

And when I moved to Athens, Georgia after dropping out of high school, I immediately got a job running a the black and white darkroom of a local photographer's studio. He paid me in film and paper and chemicals. Unlimited. And I took many a picture with a little 70's Pentax SLR he gave me.

He moved away after a couple of years and faced with having to buy my own film and paper and chemicals I balked at the prohibitive cost and put away my camera for several years, eventually selling it.

Of course I got a point and click when my son was born. You can't have a baby without a camera, but it was all snapshots until I discovered digital about eleven years ago and was given a refurbished Kodak 1 megapixel for my birthday.

And here I am. I went from the one to a Samsung 4 megapixel to an Olympus 6 and now shoot with a Nikon D80. Once you discover a love, you can let it go after a while. If you rediscover it, it's there for good and takes hold of your heart...or your eye as the case may be.
